Jesus didn't say that the world would know we are his followers by our biting rhetoric, our political leanings, our charity work, or even by our knowledge of Scripture. He said the world would know us by our love for one another. Yet it's so easy to put others at arm's length, to lash out, to put up walls. Deidra Riggs wants us to put our focus on self-preservation aside and, like Jesus, make the first move toward reconciliation. In One, Riggs shows readers that when Jesus offered himself up in our place, he was not only purchasing our salvation but also setting an example for us to follow. She helps readers understand that they are secure in God's inexhaustible love, making them free to love others lavishly--not just in what they do but in what they say, what they don't say, what they will endure, and what they will forgive. Anyone who longs for unity in the church, in their family, and in their community will find in this book both inspiring examples of loving done well and encouragement to begin the often unnoticed hard work of building bridges with those around them.

One explores the personal journey of Steve Clifford, General Director of the Evangelical Alliance. It explores the challenges of unity as outworked both in his day-to-day marriage and home life, and national and international relations. Unity is what drives him – but not just for unity’s sake. In bringing people together, we are following the John 17 mandate to show the immense love of God, who sent his Son for us. We connect to a shared mission, whether it’s nurturing a church culture which is increasingly confident in the gospel, getting involved in community action or lobbying the government for a better society. The Church is the key to long-lasting change in the world – by working in unity we can transform our communities with the good news of Jesus.

This thesis project researches causes of suffering and disconnection in western culture and searches for solutions and paths to healing through spiritual practices found in both mystical and prophetic traditions. It identifies, at least in Western culture, that there is a need to shift the current worldview of separateness to one of awareness of connection to all life that proceeds from the One Source, God and is all inclusive. A sense of belonging comes out of an awareness of this connection, yet, connection is not enough. All life is dynamic and exists on many levels and to find wholeness, and to heal from a state of disharmony and estrangement, the drive toward full actualization must also be acknowledged and developed. At the same time the drive toward unity and love must be strengthened through spiritual practices that promote compassion and acceptance of human nature and the state of man’s existence. Thus, a greater balance and wholeness can be expressed individually and in community. Healing and wholeness cannot be achieved in a divided world. To nurture the drive toward unity, awareness of one’s interdependence and a deeper spiritual understanding of one’s being is needed. This is developed through spiritual practices of prayer, meditation, and contemplation found in mystical traditions. The prophetic tradition helps to create a safe place of nurturing and compassion where each person can express their frustration and anguish and move beyond to a greater empowered state. Community provides the space for one’s gifts to be developed while offering direction and support to co-creating alternative possibilities. This thesis will focus on the elder population, its challenges and its potentials, as the ideas of this thesis are developed and processes of healing are explored. Our senior population has been effected deeply by the isolation caused in the current Western worldview and many suffer due to disconnection, disempowerment, and lack of community. As the elder population increases, reclaiming elder-wisdom and building community through spiritual and social means becomes more urgent. A sense of belonging within community offers hope and healing to the many who are struggling alone.

During a forty-year period ending in 2002, leaders of major American churches tried to unite their members, ministries, and public service in a new church they named A Church of Christ Uniting. Participating in this movement were four Methodist Churches, the Episcopal Church, the nation's largest Presbyterian Church, the United Church of Christ, the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), and the International Council of Community Churches. With a membership of close to twenty million, this church would have been spread throughout the nation more fully than any other church except the Roman Catholic. Leaders of the movement believed that this union would enable church members to experience their Christian life more fully. It would heal divisions that had existed since the Protestant Reformation 450 years earlier and displace the denominational system that was increasingly dysfunctional. By coming together in a new way, these churches could work more effectively at overcoming problems in American life--especially the challenges related to racism. Although the Consultation on Church Union (COCU) closed before converting its vision into a new form of the church, it had a significant effect on these churches and the nation. This is a story that needs to be remembered.

The social structure of the Apinaye, a Central Brazilian Indian tribe, has puzzled anthropologists for forty years. Now, in this long-awaited book previously unavailable in English, Roberto Da Matta comprehensively describes Apinaye social life and the dualistic conceptual structure that underlies it. Special attention is given to the organization of daily and ceremonial life, the ideological aspects of kinship, the political system, and the confrontation between the Apinaye and the national Brazilian society. Da Matta then enlarges his account of the Apinaye to suggest a general interpretation of Indian culture in Central Brazil.

These introductions, homilies, reflections, and prayers are not theory, but a priest's experience of a liturgical approach that works. The testimony of the faithful who say, "what a lovely mass..what a moving homily, could I have a copy?", is his touchstone. So is the popularity of the homilies on his internet, web, "A Priest Reflects". This book works because it treats each Sunday liturgy as a seamless robe of rich interwoven themes. Thus, the introduction identifies the links between the Old Testament reading and the Gospel, and adds any gems from the second reading. Then, when the scripture is read, people, clued in to the overall import, listen more profitably. The homily elaborates the key themes from the readings further, and relates them to life, with stories, anecdotes, newspaper headlines, references to common events etc. The aim is that the Word should light up our contemporary experience.. The final doxology reinforces the point that the Word is life for this world, not just the next; The creed introduction summarizes the whole, and the prayers carry that on into petitions for church leaders, civil authorities, youth, the sick, the dead, and special needs. There are special prayers for our youth, that gaps in our congregations there will be bridged. And the presiding minister should add other topical issues of the day. The reflection after holy communion again reinforces the overall message, but also leaves the people of God with something spicy and memorable to take home. So, all in all, this book should light up our masses, or services, and make them gospel based, relevant, inspirational, and focused.. The homilies are timed at about five minutes, people's normal attention span. So don't miss out on this innovative book. Buy it, and it will light up your Sunday mass, and provide spiritual food for the following week.
